BAKERSFIELD, KERN COUNTY — Thursday evening, October 22, 2026. The National Weather Service in Hanford maintained a Flood Watch until 8 p.m. PDT for Bakersfield and a broad section of Kern County as thunderstorms brought the risk of sudden heavy rain.
What does the watch actually mean?
In a 2:07 p.m. update, NWS listed Bakersfield, southern San Joaquin Valley, Buena Vista, Buttonwillow/Lost Hills, the Kern River Valley, Tehachapi, Indian Wells Valley and Mojave Desert zones under a flood watch. The forecast office said rapid runoff could cause flash flooding in streams, low crossings, storm drains, ditches and urban streets.
This is a watch, not proof that downtown Bakersfield is underwater. A Flash Flood Warning is a more immediate alert for a specific dangerous area; residents should monitor later county-specific warnings for a higher urgency message.
Where the greatest practical travel risk may appear
Low-water crossings and drainage dips can become dangerous with surprisingly little advance notice. Debris can block storm drains and ditches, and roads exposed to fast water should not be crossed. Do not drive around barricades even if a navigation app shows a shorter route.
How long does this information apply?
Caltrans and NWS information can change during an evening of showers. The 8 p.m. deadline is the NWS watch expiration listed in its October 22 update, not a prediction that every street will be dry at 8 p.m. Check NWS, Bakersfield/Kern public works and QuickMap before driving.
Primary sources: National Weather Service Hanford flash-flood and flood-advisory statements; NWS California Flood Watch; Caltrans QuickMap for confirmed state-road restrictions.
Reporting note: NWS alerts may expire or change. Rainfall estimates are those provided by the issuing forecasters, not on-the-ground measurements by California58. Never attempt to drive across a flooded roadway. California58 does not claim an unverified local road closure or that an entire town is flooded.
