BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — October 27, 2026. Drivers expecting the Bakersfield Southwest DMV to reopen on November 2 will need to adjust their plans. The California Department of Motor Vehicles now says the office at 7000 Schirra Court is scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, November 24, at 8 a.m.
The change was announced October 27. The office has been closed since July 24 for renovation, and the department says additional time is needed to complete the work. Planned improvements include new flooring, reconfigured furnishings, interior and exterior painting, signs, and parking-lot resurfacing.
Where can Bakersfield-area residents go instead?
While the Southwest office remains closed, DMV lists these alternatives:
- Bakersfield: 3120 F Street, roughly 10 miles from the Southwest office.
- Arvin: 317 Campus Drive, approximately 21 miles away.
- Taft: 165 Center Street, approximately 30 miles away; this office is open only on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- Delano: 631 Jefferson Street, approximately 38 miles away.
Travel estimates are approximate distances stated by the DMV, not real-time driving times. Confirm appointment availability and office operating hours through the agency before leaving home.
Can the transaction be completed online?
The DMV notes that many tasks, including eligible driver-license and vehicle-registration renewals, can be handled via dmv.ca.gov. Other services may require an appointment or office visit; use the agency’s Service Advisor for your particular request.
