BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — November 3, 2026.Guillermo Asuncion Gonzalez, a Republican small-business owner, is challenging incumbent Senator Melissa Hurtado in California’s 16th state Senate district on November 3. The election covers parts of Kern, Fresno, Kings and Tulare counties, including areas of Bakersfield.
Gonzalez’s campaign message
Gonzalez’s official campaign website describes the race as a campaign to restore economic opportunity in the Central Valley. Drawing on his family’s experience, he argues that children should be able to find work, build a home and remain close to their communities rather than feeling compelled to leave California.
His campaign materials put the region’s economic future at the center of his appeal. CalMatters identifies Gonzalez as a small-business owner and former aide to U.S. Representative David Valadao. He is seeking to replace Hurtado, who has represented the area in the state Senate and is campaigning on infrastructure, public safety, water and affordability.
The geographic stakes
District 16 spans four counties. That means the Senate contest will be determined by all district voters, not only those in Bakersfield, and different local newspapers may cover the same regional race from distinct community perspectives. Kern County residents have a direct interest in the next senator’s positions on jobs, water and transport investment.
What is unconfirmed on Election Day
Gonzalez lists his platform and campaign information at gonzalezforsenate.com. California58 has not verified a November 3 photo or social video of him personally voting, and has no authenticated polling-site or ballot-return details to report. No preliminary election outcome is asserted.
